Artist Statement:

In 1983, I was a junior art major at Westfield State College. I was assigned a project that required some research and was in the library looking through books in the art section. I happened across a very small section of books about Black artist and found myself in the library for hours flipping through the pages of those books. I was fascinated, and fell in love with the work of two artists in particular, Elizabeth Catlett and Charles W. White. My own work changed after that. My work became more Black. I began to focus on the Black experience and continue to do so. I’m currently working on two series; one on the Black experience in the military, and a second on the black barbershop experience.
