Artist Statement by Amy Locke:

My artistic practice is a series of self-portrayals. I concentrate on the dynamic between the view of myself in relation to widely-held perceptions of physical beauty. By combining both the delicate and the strange, I develop an alternative sense of the self, a creature that is both accessible and repulsive. I primarily utilize self-portraiture as a catalyst for these ideas, preferring to obscure and manipulate my own face and body in ways that best epitomize both ends of the beauty spectrum. Within my alteration of the natural form, a raw, dark humor emerges and emphasizes my view of the self. Employing ideas from odalisques and classic film stills, I seek to create a character that represents feminine hysteria, a blatant stab at sexualized imagery, and an ambiguity within the image.
I use a single prominent figure to make a moment seem private. I am fascinated by the grotesque that people choose not to let others see. Those private moments of oddity or that strange face that one can make but never lets anyone see. The grotesque is extremely commonplace, and I use my own grotesque to offset my own personal projected image. Even I am not immune to the power of the gaze.
