Equality Day 2016

Start: Nov. 27, 2016, 5 p.m.

End: Nov. 28, 2016, 1 a.m.

Event at Daybreak Tattoo

I think we can all agree this was a long, stressful election season and a year that was full of lows. It is not my place to comment on recent political events but I see many groups that are feeling fear and uncertainty towards the future.

As a tattooer, I recognize, in the grand scheme of things, what I do isn't that important but I want to offer what I can to support equality and respect in all forms.

On Sunday, November 27th (the Sunday after Thanksgiving), Daybreak Tattoo will be tattooing symbols of equality and hope for anyone that wants one, free of charge.

Thank you in advance for all the awesomeness that this day will bring and for all of your help in making this a true symbol of equality.

RULES / GUIDELINES

All tattoos will be small (approximately 1”) and will be simple in color and design.

  • You must be 18 or older with a photo ID that has your date of birth. No exceptions.

  • Please leave children at home for this event.

  • Only the person getting tattooed will be allowed in the tattooing area .

  • We are only doing the designs as shown. No special requests, no changes, no resizing.

  • We are not tattooing below the wrist, above the neckline, or
anywhere that would get you arrested for exposure :)

  • The shop is 600 sq ft and we will only be able to safely fit so many people in the shop at once so the majority of your wait will be outside. It is supposed to be 49 degrees and partly sunny so dress appropriately. If it rains, I hope you brought an umbrella!

  • Expect lines, expect to stand and wait. If you are physically unable to stand for long times, we will try to have a couple chairs but otherwise, there will be no seating.

  • Our parking will fill early, so be prepared to have to park and walk. Be respectful to surrounding businesses especially since your car may be sitting there for a while. The Bed, Bath, & Beyond / Babies R Us lot is decently close and you will have a crosswalk at S Westnedge and Milhem.

  • There will not be food and drink available at the shop but we are across the street from Wendy's and KFC.

  • When we hit 8pm, we are done for the day. Someone will be that next person in line when tattooing gets cutoff. Please respect the fact that it will be a long day for all the tattooers and staff and be courteous.

  • Any design offered at the event will be available after the event day for $40 (down from the shop minimum of $50).

  • Tipping is not required to get tattooed but will be graciously accepted. Each artist will have their own tip box.

SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR MAKING THIS AN AWESOME, POSITIVE DAY!!!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE IT BUT WANT AN EQUALITY DESIGN?
All the designs for this day will be available after this event. My shop minimum is $50 however I will do any of these designs for $40 as a way of showing appreciation for those that couldn't make it but wanted to.

WILL YOU BE TATTOOING MINORS?
This event will be 18 and older required to be tattooed.

When it comes to tattooing a minor, I always want to take the time to talk to both the parent and the minor to make sure that their tattoo will be a positive experience both in getting the tattoo and living with it. I expect this event to be pretty busy and chaotic and I don't feel confident that it will be an environment where that conversation can easily happen.

Obviously, I realize that being a teenager and being part of a marginalized group of any kind is difficult enough and I do not want this to be interpreted as a lack of support. If you have friends that are 18+ that want to come and get tattooed, you are more than welcome to come and enjoy the atmosphere.

CAN I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT OR IS IT WALK IN ONLY?
We are not holding spots or taking appointments. We will have a sign-in sheet and if you aren't around when we call your name, you will be crossed off and we will move on to the next person. This is the only way we can think to keep things fair.

WHAT DESIGNS WILL BE OFFERED?
We have posted a preview of the designs we are offering in the event page. Please refer to that post.

I CAN'T MAKE IT, COULD YOU DO A FREE TATTOO ON ANOTHER DAY?
Unfortunately not. All designs for this day will be available for $40 after the event.

CAN I GET A FREE TATTOO THAT ISN'T RELATED TO EQUALITY?
Definitely not. I want to show solidarity and support people I see hurting and anxious about the future. Please do not try to take advantage of what I hope will be a positive event.

WHERE IS YOUR SHOP?
Daybreak Tattoo is right across the street from KFC / Wendys and right next to Honey Baked Ham. If you are coming from i-94 or downtown Kalamazoo, it will be on the left.

Westnedge will likely be very busy due to holiday shoppers. The shops front drive off of Westnedge is pretty awful (steep and tore up) so you may prefer to turn onto Boston Ave (right after Guitar Center on left if coming from downtown / I-94 / right the shop on right from opposite) and take the first drive on the right which leads to our lot.

We only have so much parking (maybe 15-20 spots). We will need everyone's help to keep things positive and to be respectful of the surrounding businesses and neighborhood.
