Event at Central Tattoo Studio

Philadelphia, PA – Central Tattoo Studio is pleased to announce the opening of Kate Minford’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, Broken Thread. The exhibition opens on December 4th and runs through January 31st in the first floor gallery space located at 171 W. Girard. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, December 5th from 6-10pm.

Broken Thread takes a look at Minford’s exploration of material as it relates to themes of female identity and the disjunction of craftsmanship and fine art. Fiber art has closely been associated with craft as performed by women, while painting has typically been dominated by men. Minford has broken these associations by manipulating the inherent qualities of the material to create beautiful, textural abstractions in thread on canvas that balance elements of sculpture, craft and painting.

In the way a painter lays individual brushstrokes, Minford creates her sculptural thread paintings by lofting different colored thread, one by one, onto the canvas. The final work is bold and deeply textural with undulating surfaces.

Kate Minford studied at both the University of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Arts in Philadelphia. Minford was accepted into the residency program at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn in 2011 and joined the Emerson Landing Residency in Wye Mills, MD in 2013.
